What Is Seed Cycling?
If you’ve spent any time exploring natural approaches to women’s health, you’ve probably come across the term seed cycling.
But what exactly is it, and is it worth trying?
As a herbalist, I see seed cycling as one of many simple lifestyle practices that may support overall health. While it’s not a magic fix, it can be an easy and nourishing habit to incorporate alongside other foundations such as nutrition, sleep, stress management and, where appropriate, herbal medicine.
What Is Seed Cycling?
Seed cycling involves eating specific seeds during different phases of your menstrual cycle.
The idea is to rotate seeds in line with the natural hormonal changes that occur throughout the month.
A common approach is:
Follicular Phase
(From Day 1 of your period until ovulation)
1 tablespoon freshly ground flaxseeds
1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds
Luteal Phase
(From ovulation until your next period)
1 tablespoon freshly ground sunflower seeds
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
If you don’t have a regular cycle or you’re postmenopausal, a different approach may be more appropriate.
In my practice, I often recommend that women without a regular menstrual cycle or those who are postmenopausal follow the moon cycle instead. This involves eating flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds from the new moon to the full moon, then switching to sunflower seeds and sesame seeds from the full moon back to the new moon.
While this approach hasn’t been specifically studied, some women find it provides a simple and consistent rhythm to follow.
Why Do People Try Seed Cycling?
People choose to try seed cycling for a variety of reasons, including to support:
Overall hormonal health
Regular menstrual cycles
Premenstrual wellbeing
A nutrient-rich diet
The seeds themselves provide valuable nutrients including healthy fats, fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals that support overall wellbeing.
While there is currently limited clinical research specifically on seed cycling, many women enjoy it as a simple, food-based practice that encourages consistency and greater awareness of their menstrual cycle.
Why I Like It
One of the reasons I recommend seed cycling to some clients is because I’ve tried it myself and had a really positive experience.
Personally, I noticed improvements in my PMS, skin and ovulation after incorporating seed cycling as part of my routine, alongside other healthy lifestyle habits. While everyone’s experience is different, I continue to eat my seeds daily because they’re a simple and nourishing way to include healthy fats, fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals in my diet.
I also love that seed cycling encourages women to become more aware of their menstrual cycle. By paying attention to the different phases of your cycle, you can begin to recognise your own patterns and better understand what your body may need throughout the month.
For me, it’s not about finding a quick fix—it’s about building sustainable habits that support long-term health.
It’s About More Than Seeds
Seed cycling isn’t something I recommend in isolation.
Hormonal health is influenced by many factors, including:
Stress
Sleep
Nutrition
Digestive health
Movement
Overall lifestyle
This is why I always look at the bigger picture rather than relying on one strategy alone.
Is Seed Cycling Right for Everyone?
Like any health practice, seed cycling isn’t suitable or necessary for everyone.
Because the seeds used are naturally high in fibre, some people—particularly those with certain digestive conditions or a sensitive gut—may initially experience bloating, wind, or abdominal discomfort. In these situations, introducing them more gradually, adjusting the amount, or focusing on other foundations first may be more appropriate.
This is one of the reasons I don’t recommend the same approach for everyone. What works well for one person may not be the right fit for another, which is why I always tailor my recommendations to the individual.
If you’re unsure whether seed cycling is appropriate for you, it’s worth discussing it with a qualified healthcare practitioner.
My Approach
I believe simple, sustainable habits often create the biggest long-term changes.
Rather than chasing quick fixes, I work with clients to build strong foundations using herbal medicine, nutrition and realistic lifestyle changes that fit into everyday life.
Seed cycling can be one piece of that puzzle—but it should always be considered in the context of the whole person.
